Tigers regain solo lead in UAAP volleyball competitions

University of Santo Tomas regained solo lead as it crushed National University in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21, Saturday at the resumption of the 72nd UAAP volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Hendry Pecana and John Paul Torres both scored 13 points as the defending men's champion Tigers roared to their fifth win in six outings.

Harby Ilano and Julius Sioson contributed 11 points apiece for the EspaƱa-based squad.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs of Coach Roberto Javier to the bottom of the team standings as they suffered their fifth setback against only one win.

In the first match, Ateneo de Manila surprised University of the East in a thrilling five-setter, 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 15-12.

Duane Craig Teves punched in 14 hits while Andrei John Pareja logged nine hits and four blocks to spearhead the Blue Eagles to only their second victory.

The Blue Eagles moved up to solo sixth place behind their victims who dropped a notch to fifth spot with an even 3-3 win-loss slate.

Over at the University of Santo open field, reigning champion Adamson Lady Falcons proved they are still the team to beat despite losing prized pitcher Cloine Muyco.

The Lady Falcons clobbering the La Salle Lady Archers, 13-1 in an abbreviated game at the start of the UAAP softball competition.

Joining them as opening day winners are the UST Tigresses, who also scored an abbreviated 11-1 victory over the Ateneo Lady Eagles
