After bitter home defeat Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA is out of contention for the Playoffs 12

2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League

Luxembourg, January 12, 2010. The Polish girls of Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA were forced to abandon their last hopes to continue the competition after they suffered a very sad 2:3 defeat tonight on home soil against Czech Modranska PROSTEJOV. RC CANNES continues a very impressive march in the 2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League with another quick three-setter against the Croats of ZOK RIJEKA. France has something more to celebrate tonight as former CICL champion TOURS VB scored a mighty 3:0 against CSKA SOFIA to stay tuned for a spot among the best 12 in Europe.

Results

Men
TOURS VB (FRA) vs. CSKA SOFIA (BUL) 3:0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16)

Women
ZOK RIJEKA (CRO) vs. RC CANNES (FRA) 0:3 (22-25, 17-25, 28-30)
Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA (POL) vs. Modranska PROSTEJOV (CZE) 2:3 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-25, 7-15)

TOURS VB defeated pretty easily CSKA SOFIA of Bulgaria in front of the home fans (25-23, 25-18, 25-16). Alexandre Gaumont Casias finished the match as the top scorer with 14 points, with David Konecny contributing 13 more for the hosts. Kenyan Philip Maiyo topped the count for CSKA SOFIA with 13 as well. In the first set, despite 6 blocks of the Bzlgarians, TOURS VB was in the lead all the way through (16:11, 21:16 and 25-23) with Gaumont Casias scoring 5 rallies and Maiyo only 3. In the second and third sets, the highly concentrated French guys controlled the game via Ngapeth, Konecny and Gaumont. French coach Eric Ngapeth was really pleased tonight with the performance of his players and now looks forward to the deciding game against Unicaja ALMERIA slated for next Wednesday.

In front of 1'200 spectators ZOK RIJEKA lost tonight against France's RC CANNES in three straight sets (22-25, 17-25, 28-30). With this fifth defeat the Croats lost their very last chances to make it to the Playoffs 12 and round up the standings of Pool A. Despite the loss, coach Igor Lovrinov was pleased with the game his girls displayed tonight: “I am pleased with our game, we provided an excellent resistance against a strong opponent. We received and served well throughout the match. There was only a short section of the second set where we relented”. His assistant Aleksander Milosavljevic added: “I agree that we played well, but not enough to defeat RC CANNES. I think we had a very good chance not only to clinch a set, but also to push them seriously”.

A real thriller was to be experienced tonight in Poland. In Pool C Czech team Modranska PROSTEJOV eventually scored the match against the hosts of Aluprof BIELSKO-BIALA and hence qualifies for the Playoffs 12 of the 2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League. Both teams started this very important game with some good actions. The players were aware that the inaugural set may have been a key to take control of the game. It was Aluprof to speed away first. The hosts sailed up to 14:9 after some good services and efficient blocks. The Czechs regained their balance quite quickly and evened the score at 20:20. But the most important points went to the hosts for the final 25-20. Aluprof enjoyed a better start also in the second set and reached the first technical break with a clear lead (8:3). In this section of the game the Poles showed their true strength in the serving area. The players of Modranska tried to find their best but it was not enough to come close. They made too many mistakes so the team of head coach Mariusz Wiktorowicz kept dominating until the last ball. The Polish players were able to continue their run in the third period of the game when they came ahead at 8:5 at the first short technical break. In fact the Czechs soon began playing better and worked-out a four-point difference (18:14). Despite an immediate chase, Aluprof didn’t master the situation and lost the set 22-25.The initial part of the fourth set was balanced but the Czech team managed to play with more consistency (13:9). Quite unexpectedly, they moved up rapidly to the end of the set after some fantastic services of Kimberly Glass. After losing two sets in a row the Poles couldn’t recover immediately and Modranska started the tie-break in the right way. Both teams changed sides of the court at the score of 8:6 for the Czechs. For the guests it was enough to win this match and book a place in the next round. Anna Barańska, the captain of Aluprof, was really disappointed after the match. “Our rivals played a good volleyball and we could do nothing from the third set onwards”, she said. “We are so happy with the win. We incredibly turned the score around”, stated Milada Spalova, the captain of the Czechs. “We were determined to win but it was enough only for two sets” said Mariusz Wiktorowicz. His Czech counterpart, Miroslav Cada, added: “The good quality of our services enabled us to take control of the situation. Moreover, we had more players in a good shape this evening”.

Red Star leading the way

serbian wienerligaRed Star Belgrade (Crvena Zvezda) are on top of the Serbian volleyball league and the club to beat after 11 rounds of the WienerLiga.

Three points ahead of defending champions Radnicki and nine points ahead of rivals Partizan there seems to be nothing stopping the 'crveno beli.' The red and whites from Belgrade have been in excellent form this season led by their charismatic captain Tomislav Dokic they are heading towards the finals with no problems brushing the competition apart. The higlight was a emphatic 3:0 win away to rivals Partizan.

crvena zvezda

Radnicki has also been impressive. Coming back off a title win and also compeating in the CEV Champions League, It has been a busy season for the team from Kragujevac but another good one, gaining invaluable experience taking on some of volleyball's best clubs. It seems to be that these two clubs will be the ones to beat and most likely the final contestants. Third placed Partizan had a good start to the season but costly defeats to the leaders and shock loses to Ribnica and Mladi Radnik has hurt the clubs morale.

The most successful club in Serbian volleyball history Vojvodina has had a shocking season so far. The red and whites from Novi Sad have Suffered five defeats in eleven games which is not accecptable for a club that was a title contender at the begining of the season.

Cuneo second after win in Treviso

wijsmans wout cuneoCuneo stops Treviso’s winning streak at 9. Verona creates a gap between top 8 and Perugia, which is 5 points from the playoff zone.

ITAS DIATEC TRENTINO - LUBE BANCA MARCHE MACERATA 3:1
It has not been easy in the second and fourth set for Trento but in the end it came away with a 3-1 win, bouncing back straight away following its Champions League disappointment in Moscow. Junatorena was the man of the match again as Trento goes 9 points clear at the top thanks to Cuneo’s win in Treviso.

Radostin Stoytchev (Itas Diatec Trentino): “I’m obviously very happy with the result, this allows us to extend our advantage at the top despite the fact that we haven’t got much time to train right now with all the games we are facing. The team showed great character today, Macerata played well and made very few unforced errors”.

SISLEY TREVISO - BRE BANCA LANNUTTI CUNEO 1:3
Treviso was defeated at home by Cuneo, which moves above Treviso into second place. This put an end to Treviso’s 9 game winning streak.

Alberto Giuliani (Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo) "Positive performance, apart from the first set, in which we did not have the worst of start, though. Our attack was not flowing and Treviso systematically punished us. These are three crucial points, this will give us confidence after a tough period, in which we trained very little and had a few injuries, like Wijmans and Nikolov. This week has not been easy either, but the boys did well on court. We definitely don’t look at the cup game, this encounter has nothing to do with any other one”.

cuneo win in treviso

COPRATLANTIDE PIACENZA - TONNO CALLIPO VIBO VALENTIA 3:0
Piacenza recovers well after its Champions League defeat, by sweeping Vibo thanks mainly to some good serving. Oivanen was named MVP, but the whole team played well.

ESSE-TI CARILO LORETO - ACQUA PARADISO MONZA 3:2
Loreto won its first game after two months of drought. Van Dijk was back in the starting line up as Moretti’s team gathered two crucial points. Led by an unstoppable Gavotto, Monza made a good comeback in the last set but could not pass the finishing line.

MARMI LANZA VERONA - RPA-LUIGIBACCHI.IT PERUGIA 3:0
Standing ovation in the Pala Olimpia as Kromm scored the winning points. Composed in the crunch time, Verona swept a big rival for a playoff spot in Perugia.

Massimo Colaci (Marmi Lanza Verona): “Satisfied with the result, this was a fundamental game for us. We wanted the three points, this is what we have to do to get to the playoffs, win the games against the other teams aiming to make it to the top eight and win our home games. There are still many games to be played but we are in it and tonight we showed how much we want to reach our target”.

PRISMA TARANTO - ARAN CUCINE ABRUZZO PINETO 3:1
Cleber took over Rivaldo and registered the numbers of an outside hitter with 29 points (64% in attack, 4 blocks and 1 ace). Taranto ran the risk of extending the game to the fifth set, though.

ANDREOLI LATINA - YOGA FORLI 3:2
The big clash between two teams fighting to stay up went to Latina. Over two hours of entertaining action ended in a tie-break. Latina dominated Forli in the sets it won but could not seal it before the decisive set and had to share the points. These are important points for both teams and next week some massive encounters are coming up: Pineto versus Latina and Forli versus Loreto.

Panathinaikos catch up Olympiakos

samica panathinaikosPanathinaikos joined Olympiakos in the first place after this week games. Panathinaikos won AEK 3-1 and Olympiakos has lost one point by winning Kifisia 3-2.

My name is Noelle Gipson. I am currently a junior at Elkhart Memorial (Ind.) High where I play volleyball and run track, as well as many other things. I would like to share with you my volleyball experiences. They are action filled, sometimes tense, but always a GREAT time.

Practice has been going pretty well so far, minus the double-suicides for dropped balls. Running is just another way to teach us to be more disciplined and make sure we hit the floor for every ball.

Our first few practices was mostly defense. I loved it as I do every practice. We did run through's from every which way of the court, after we completed the pass we of course had to do foot movement: karaoke, back peddle, and sprints. After chasing down the ball, we forgot what we were supposed to do. My feet just did their own thing until I realized I wasn't doing the correct movement when I got back to the end of the line!

We started working on offense this week, which means JUMPING. Hitting showed us just how fatigued or out of shape we were. Our verticals are probably in the negatives right now. But we have some pretty big hitters on the team, so I'm sure getting whipped back in shape will be no problem for us. Alli Sailor and Sarah Dikos are both pretty good hitters out on the outside, and Lisa Parsons just keeps getting faster in the middle, and myself on the right side, yeah, we'll be back on top in a few more practices.

With our first tournament approaching quickly, working hard is a must and that's all we've been doing from the start. Even if working hard leaves us breathless, and craving for an inhaler, (even though I'm the only one with asthma on the team) we'll do it. Our team is funny like that, but serious about our sport, it's our way of life

USA’s Evan Patak a force for the future

USA's Evan Patak has the 2012 Olympic Games as a major goal
Lausanne, Switzerland, 12 January, 2010 - USA’s up-and-coming star Volleyball Evan Patak has been labeled a force for the future by Team USA assistant coach Rick McLaughlin and has the potential to hit the big time at the 2012 Olympic Games.

McLaughlin, speaking to the Mercury News in San José, California, said that the young up and coming star is improving year on year and could peak at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“Evan has been given a golden opportunity, and he’s made the most of it,” said McLaughlin. “The way he is hitting the ball right now, he will be a force for this country when it comes time for the next Olympics,” he added.

Patak, who plays opposite, missed out on being part of the gold medal team that were victorious in Beijing 2008, but the 25 year-old is using that as motivation.

“Watching my friends and teammates win a gold medal was an emotional experience," Patak said. "It gave me concrete evidence that anything is possible if you want it bad enough.

“On a personal level, I noticed significant improvements in the level of my game compared to years past. In addition, there were numerous times in matches when I contributed to the success of my team.”

England Federation provides CEV with London 2012 update

During the discussions Richard Calicott, the President of the England Volleyball Federation, expressed his desire to see English teams competing in European competitions again.
Luxembourg, Luxembourg, January 12, 2010 - The President of the England Volleyball Federation Richard Callicott visited the CEV headquarters in Luxembourg on Monday to update FIVB Executive Vice President and CEV President André Meyer on preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Mr Callicott firstly expressed the desire of the English Federation to become affiliated with one of the Zonal Associations that are currently overseen by the European Federation.

Additionally, the English President expressed his gratitude to Mr Meyer for his support in the organisation of possible test events, most notably the possibility for England to host the final round of the FIVB 2011 World League.

Furthermore, to strengthen the professional training of English officials towards the 2012 games, CEV has agreed to reserve an additional place within the Control Committee of the next FIVB Women's Junior Championship in Serbia.

Mr Calicott finished the meeting by saying he hopes to see English teams rejoin the European Championships, most notably the GM Capital Challenge Cup.

1/6/2010 - Katie Messing: Junior of the Year

by Kirstin Olsen/ESPN RISE

Katie Messing of The Woodlands (Texas) has been named ESPN RISE Volleyball Junior of the Year. The outside hitter had a stellar season with 560 kills, 153 digs and 105 blocks.

ESPN RISE Volleyball Junior of the Year Katie Messing.

The 6-foot-4 Messing, in late September, verbally committed to Pepperdine after visiting Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA, Arkansas, Cal, Virginia and Arizona.

The native Texan, born on Halloween, got started early when she was eight playing at the YMCA and started club at age 11. Messing and her older sister Michelle would play in the driveway when they were little. [Michelle] Messing is the only other volleyer in the family and plays at University of Louisiana-Monroe.

It has been no easy feat for the junior, who's never played JV, to last an entire season of almost 50 matches in easily one of the toughest 5A divisions in the country.

"There are a ton of great players in Texas. We know there will be tough competition no matter what tournaments we go to, so it keeps us on our toes to get ready for the bigger national tournaments.”

A highlight of the year for Katie came in a win over Cy-Woods in four games in the second round of playoffs, avenging a disappointing loss to early in the preseason.

Texas and California have the most teams in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 Ranking with seven each. In The Woodlands 5A division alone includes powerhouses ESPN RISE FAB 50 No. 4 Amarillo, No. 27 Westlake, No. 29 O'Connor, No. 31 Reagan, and No. 46 Westwood. The Highlanders finished the season 40-7 with a tough four game loss to Georgetown in the 5A Region 2 Quarterfinals, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 27-25.

Leslie Madison has been Katie's varsity coach for all three years at The Woodlands where she has been their "go to" player.

"Katie was the MVP of our team. Not only because of her ability but her

consistency as well. She is not a loud leader but one that leads by her

actions. Other players look to her as a leader on the court. " Madison stated.

After the long season and over 1000 swings later, Messing is licking her wounds and ready to play with her club Asics Willowbrook.

"I'd love to say I'm not [burnt out]. But it was a long season that leads straight into club season; I think we had four days off in between. I've been struggling with an overused and loose hitting shoulder since I got home from training and Thailand, but some physical therapy has helped and I'm ready and excited for the long stretch of club season.”

Messing also had the opportunity to play with the USA Youth National Team. In 2007 she was chosen to play for the USA Volleyball High Performance Select Team. In 2008 she was named to the U.S. Girls ' Youth National A2 Team. In 2009 she was named to the U.S. Girls' Youth National Training Team and competed at the Girls' Youth FIVB World Championships in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand in July.

"Playing for the YNT toughened me mentally. The coaches were tough on us, and I'm thankful they were. They're some of the most well-known and knowledgeable coaches around, so getting the chance to work with them was an honor. I saw a whole different dimension of the game that I had never experienced before,” Messing commented.

"Just playing at such a high level was very rewarding, and it helped my game a lot. I improved at passing and defense tremendously. Their mentality was that they didn't care if you were tall and a hitter, you were still expected to pass just as well and fight for the defensive spots just like everyone else. That was one of the most influential experiences of my life as a person and a player.”

The self proclaimed juggling water skier (not at the same time) has a laundry list of accolades: Tournament MVP/Best Offensive Player: Kingwood Tournament, All-tournament: Pearland Tournament, 1st team- District 14-5A

Montgomery County Co-Offensive Player of the Year, 1st team- All greater Houston, All-state- Texas Girls Coaches Association, 2nd team All-State- Texas Sports Writers.

Now she can add the ESPN RISE Volleyball Junior of the Year to her accomplishments and start the New Year with a bang.

Come back soon for the 2010 ESPN RISE Volleyball All-America Team and Senior of the Year!

Taliban attack on volleyball match

Pakistan is under the shade of terror and that is directly from the savage Taliban. While the army has been pounding the Swat area, Taliban has struck a fatal blow at a village in north-west Pakistan that strongly opposes Al-Qaeda and the extremist fanatics.

A volleyball match was on and many villagers were present. But in no time, a suicide bomber ripped himself apart in a SUV and this led to the death of nearly 100 people, mostly old people and children. This is near the town of Lakki Marwat.

This has come as a jolt to president Asif Ali Zardari and the pressure has built upon him. Media reports say that it was a major disaster at the blast site where pieces of flesh and blood were seen splattered all over. Around 140 people are injured and are said to be in critical condition.

IPFW volleyball wins, hits fund-raising goal

Elon Fyfield had 18 kills, three digs and three blocks as the IPFW men’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 victory against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday at the Gates Sports Center.

The scores were 30-24, 30-25, 30-24.

Darryl Shank added 11 kills and four digs for the Mastodons. Dan Mader had 55 assists. The two teams meet again at 7 p.m. today.

Before the game, the school announced that the goal of raising $1 million dollars for the Arnie Ball Legacy Endowment has been reached. IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell also announced that because the goal was met by Dec. 31, IPFW will match the donations dollar-for-dollar.

“We started this campaign less than two years ago, and IPFW now has one of the few men’s volleyball programs in the country whose scholarships are fully funded from endowments,” Wartell said in a statement.

The Nittany Lions trailed from the start after a kill by Hawaii's Matt Rawson and a PSU attack error. Penn State managed to stay within two of UH until a Rawson kill sparked an 8-3 run giving Hawaii a 15-9 lead. Two Warrior errors and a Price kill had PSU within four, 16-12. The teams traded points with three Price kills and one from Comfort keeping the Lions behind by four, 19-15. Penn State worked to within three, 21-19, after a Warrior error, a Price ace and a huge block by Lipsitz and Sunder. UH increased its lead to four on two kills from Jonas Umlauft and one from Gus Tauniga, but Penn State tallied three straight kills to be within one, 24-23, of tying the set. The Nittany Lions managed to stay within a point of the Warriors until two PSU errors and a Hawaii ace secured the set for UH, 30-26.

The two squads stayed close early in the second set with Hawaii grabbing a two-point edge, 8-6, on two Penn State errors. Kills by Price and Comfort moved Penn State back within one, 9-8. The Lions tied the set at 10-10 on a joint stuff by Lipsitz and Goas. Penn State took its first lead of the set on a Price ace and moved ahead by two thanks to a kill and ace from Lipsitz. Two PSU service errors allowed the Warriors to come within two, but one kill each by Price and Comfort kept Penn State ahead by two, 15-13. Penn State maintained its slim lead until three errors gave Hawaii the boost it needed to take over the lead. Price tied the set at 17-17 with a kill, but back-to-back Hawaii kills had the Lions trailing by two, 19-17. PSU trailed by three until kills by Sunder and Comfort, a solo block by Price and a Sunder ace allowed Penn State to tie it at 23-23. A Price kill put Penn State back ahead and another ace by Sunder gave the Nittany Lions some much-needed breathing room, 25-23. Kills from Price, Lipsitz and Comfort put the Lions in set-point position and Price notched an ace to give Penn State a set two win, 30-26.

The third set began much like the second with the two team remaining close until three straight PSU kills put the Lions up by three, 7-4. The Warriors fought back to within one, 8-7, but kills by Price and Comfort and a Sunder ace had PSU ahead by four, 11-7. The two squads traded service errors before a Sunder kill put the Lions ahead by five, 14-9. A UH service error had PSU leading 15-11 at the midpoint of the frame. Penn State dominated much of the remainder of the set building an eight-point advantage, 24-16. The Warriors came within six, 29-23, before a Comfort kill closed out set three for PSU, 30-23.

The Lions trailed early in the fourth set, but three UH service errors helped Penn State to a 6-4 lead. The score would tie seven times before Penn State took back the lead, 15-13, after a Hawaii error and a joint stuff by Lipsitz and Sunder. UH managed to tie the score again at 15-15, but kills from Lipsitz and Sunder, as well as a Warrior error put PSU ahead by three, 18-15. Penn State kept the Warriors at bay until two consecutive kills allowed them to tie it at 19-19. The score would go on to tie five times before UH took a two-point lead, 27-25, sending PSU to the bench for a timeout. Hawaii increased its lead to three, 28-25, before a Lipsitz kill and a triple block by Goas, Sunder and freshman Ian Hendries (Cardiff, Calif.) brought the Lions within one, 28-27. After a UH timeout and despite a service error by the Warriors, Hawaii claimed set three, 30-28.

Despite trailing 2-1 to start the final set, the Lions went on a 5-1 run for a 6-3 lead. Three UH kills brought the Warriors within one, 7-6, but Sunder put one down before the team switched sides of the net for an 8-6 lead. The Lions built their lead to four, 11-7, and allowed the Warriors just two more points. A block by Price and Lipsitz put PSU in match-point position and a triple stuff by Goas, Lipsitz and gave Penn State a 15-9 fifth set win.
