Elon Fyfield had 18 kills, three digs and three blocks as the IPFW men’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 victory against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday at the Gates Sports Center.
The scores were 30-24, 30-25, 30-24.
Darryl Shank added 11 kills and four digs for the Mastodons. Dan Mader had 55 assists. The two teams meet again at 7 p.m. today.
Before the game, the school announced that the goal of raising $1 million dollars for the Arnie Ball Legacy Endowment has been reached. IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell also announced that because the goal was met by Dec. 31, IPFW will match the donations dollar-for-dollar.
“We started this campaign less than two years ago, and IPFW now has one of the few men’s volleyball programs in the country whose scholarships are fully funded from endowments,” Wartell said in a statement.
The Mad Ants look to snap a five-game losing streak today at Erie. Fort Wayne lost to Utah 131-120 in the final game of the 2010 NBA D-League Showcase on Thursday in Boise, Idaho. Fort Wayne plays at Erie at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Mark Shelvin scored 21 points and Gordon Hayward added 20 to help Butler (11-4, 4-0 Horizon League) defeat Wright State 77-65 in Dayton. … Detroit used a late 14-2 run to overcome Cory Johnson’s 31 points and beat Valparaiso 77-67 in Detroit.
Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders says he has met with the grand jury regarding the Gilbert Arenas gun investigation and indicated that players on his team have also met with authorities. Saunders also confirmed that he has banned gambling on the team plane.
Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl dismissed forward Tyler Smith from the team a week after his arrest with three other players on misdemeanor gun and drug charges.
